Homemade Starbucks Doubleshot Recipe (Shaken Iced Espresso)

Recipes, The Best Of

The time has come for a homemade Starbucks Doubleshot recipe (which is now called a Shaken Iced Espresso)! I am going to show you how to make this with a Nespresso machine and with a Moka Express.

A few years ago I discovered my new favorite beverage from Starbucks which became a treat-yo-self favorite.

It is as follows: Grande Iced Starbucks Doubleshot. 1 pump classic. Heavy cream instead of milk.

If I’m feeling extra, I level up: Venti Iced Starbucks Doubleshot. 2 pumps classic. Heavy cream instead of milk.

This drink is creamy but still has the robust flavor of espresso to make me feel awake and energized. The classic syrup is the perfect addition to bring everything together.

Is it expensive? Yes. Did I ever want to make it at home? No.

Part of the treat of this drink was getting into my car, going through the drive-thru, and enjoying that someone else was making my coffee (I make my coffee every other morning!). Bonus: time in the car = time to listen to playlists or vox friends!

But many of the Starbucks stores around us are closed completely and I am not venturing out of my house much these days.

So, here we are!

You will need:
Ice
Espresso beans or pods
Honey simple syrup (or classic simple syrup)
Heavy cream

Tools:
A way to make espresso (we have a Nespresso and a Moka Express)
A shaker
A strainer (if your shaker does not have a lid with a strainer)
A glass to pour all the espresso shots into (I have this measuring cup which lots of you asked about)
A cup filled with ice

For the Nespresso or Espresso Machine:
We have the Nespresso and I like using the Firenze Arpeggio pods or the Roma pods. Both are a dark roast. Use whatever roast you prefer (medium, dark, light).

A grande Starbucks doubleshot has three shots of espresso. We use two-three nespresso pods and click on the Short Cup button to make the espresso. This will give you 5-7 oz. espresso.

Add 1 TBS honey simple syrup into the glass with the hot espresso. Pour this into the shaker filled with ice.

Secure lid and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds. Some of the ice will melt, helping tame down the espresso and shaking will create the froth we all love to see in our cup!

Using a strainer, pour the espresso and simple syrup mixture into a cup filled with ice.

Add 1/4 cup heavy cream. Enjoy!

If you like yours a little more sweet, add more honey simple syrup until desired taste. Same goes with the heavy cream. Make it as creamy as you would like.

Method for Moka Express:
The Moka Express is a stovetop method to make espresso. It is much less expensive than an espresso machine, takes up less room, and is very easy to use. For years we used a Moka Express but after we realized we really enjoy espresso quite a bit at home, we purchased a Nespresso.

If you are just wading into espresso-at-home territory, this is a great option!

I have the 6-cup Moka Express which makes about 8 ounces espresso. If you are making the espresso just for yourself, I recommend the 3-cup Moka express which makes 4-5 ounces espresso.

You will need to buy your own espresso beans. For a truly authentic experience, you can purchase Starbucks espresso beans in store or in Target. Otherwise, any espresso beans will do.

If your espresso beans are not already ground, use a grinder to grind your beans. I grind them between the fine and medium setting (espresso beans are usually ground fine but for the Moka Express it is best if they are a little more coarse).

Unless you are truly a coffee aficionado, go ahead and buy the beans already ground or have them ground in-store.

Unscrew the Moka Express. Remove the strainer. Fill the bottom with water to the fill line (depending on what size Moka Express you have will determine your fill line). Place the strainer over the water. Fill with espresso. Do not pack the espresso down as it can clog the strainer.

Screw the top of the Moka Express on. Place on stovetop over medium-low heat. Do not leave! You will want to wait until the water comes to a boil, this will take 5-8 minutes. After it comes to a boil, a few minutes later, you will hear a gurgling sound. Once you hear the sound, remove the Moka Express from the stove. Allow to set for 1-2 minutes as the espresso is still being made.

Now you can open the lid (be careful not to touch the metal) and you will see your espresso!

In a shaker filled with ice, add 1 TBS honey simple syrup. Pour espresso from Moka Express into the shaker.

I hope you enjoy your doubelshot at home!
