It’s hot. It’s summer. I am drinking all the smoothies. And then I decided to make my own paleo smoothie recipe! Not just any paleo smoothie – a hydrating paleo smoothie!
And lets face it. Staying hydrated is just plain healthy. Healthy for your skin. Healthy for your mind. Healthy for your internal organs.
Coconut water happens to be known for its great source of electrolytes which is what helps keep a body hydrated. It has more potassium than a banana and you know what potassium does? Hydrates the body! Many fitness trainers recommend drinking pure, 100% coconut water after a workout to quickly re-hydrate the body.
Have you tasted coconut water? I have tried it no less than three times and I can’t seem to get past my first few sips. Desperate to have this electrolyte powerhouse in my body – I decided to use it to make a Paleo smoothie. Oh man, it is yummy!! And paleo at that. Can I get a High. Kick. ?? 🙂
A Paleo Smoothie Recipe with Coconut Water
This is so simple. We’re going to use 1 cup frozen mangoes and 1 whole orange, peeled. I don’t bother juicing the orange. I just throw the whole thing in and it does not create that much pulp. But if you are a strict anti-pulp guy or gal, go ahead and juice the orange 🙂
Here is the star of the show: 1 cup 100% pure, cold coconut water. Make sure to read the back of the ingredient list on the coconut water you buy. Several brands slip in pure cane sugar. We don’t want any of that.
Also add 1 cup of pure coconut milk or pure almond milk and 1 cup ice cubes to make it super cold and frothy. I have been using the word “super” a lot in this post. Hmmm….my apologies 🙂
Blend it all together for about 1 to 2 minutes and ZIP a super hydrating smoothie.
It is so cool and refreshing. The orange gives it added vitamin C. It is like a sunrise in your mouth.
I tend to drink this every morning. After my coffee…haha, I know. I know. I need help.
I want to say I am so thankful to all of you who have tried my recipes and sent text messages, emails, FB messages, left comments… You make me smile so big, I wish you could see!
Like I mentioned above, I will be in Nicaragua next week getting a firsthand look at how God uses Compassion and sponsors to release children from poverty. Please follow us! We have some fabulous bloggers going with us. And I will be blogging over here.

I am allergic to oranges! What would be a good substitute?
Hey Kris, try fresh blueberries. About a cup. They are an excellent source of antioxidants and they should mix well with the coconut water and milk 🙂 Let me know how it goes.
This sounds *super* delish, so I will give it a go the next time I’m at the store and can pick up some coconut water – which, I can also not get past the first few sips of. Eww.
🙂 Hope you have a great trip to Nicaragua!
Thanks, Kristen 😉 You are SUPER sweet!
Um… This tastes like an Orange Julius!! Amazing!
Hi, love your blog and would love to ask u a million questions. But first, how many servings is this? And would it work in a magic bullet? Thks.
Hi Dee! Thanks so much 🙂 This makes 32 oz (4 cups). A serving size is typically 16 oz, so this recipe makes enough for two! I updated the recipe to reflect this. I don’t have a magic bullet and have never used one so I am not sure. Does a magic bullet handle frozen fruit and ice well? If you try it you should leave a comment and let us all know if it worked! Hope you enjoy 🙂
This does look refreshing–can’t wait to try it and I love your coffee comment. I struggle with that as well! 🙂
.. question for you regarding the coconut milk… do you use canned full fat coconut milk ? or when you say pure coconut milk, do you refer to the brand ‘Silk Pure’… ?
And in general, when a recipe calls for coconut milk..how do we know if it canned or in carton box..? full fat or light.. ? there is a lot of difference in calories..
thanks in advance for your thought on this subjet
Hi Annie! I always use canned full fat organic coconut milk from Native Forest. If I ever do something different, I mention it.
This smoothie is amazing at rehydrating! I’m new to the Paleo lifestyle (doing it via the Whole Life Challenge) and am pretty active so getting enough fluids is key. I made and drank this smoothie last night after a pretty intense workout and it was the first night that I did not have to wake up in the middle of the night to drink from my water bottle. My husband (who sweats waaay more than me) said that he didn’t have to wake up in the middle of the night either. This was the only thing that I did different so I’m attributing the feeling hydrated to this smoothie. I modified the recipe to include nutmeg for taste.
Thanks for posting this!

I would love to make this now but I don’t have coconut water nor do I have almond milk is there something else I can substitute ?
Hi Lesha! You could use just water but there will be a certain coconut flavor missing. Do you have coconut milk by chance?!
yummy…. really enjoyed x
Try harmless harvest. It is in the refridgerated section at Whole Foods or Fairway sells it (not sure where you live but google it). The shelf stable ones are heated and taste like soap to me. Once you try real unprocessed coconut water which is only found refidgerated you can’t go back to the other stuff. It really tastes like you just cracked open a coconut and stuck a straw in…only drawback is they are more expensive :/
This looks delicious! I’m adding it to my website with kudos to you 🙂 http://www.smoothiepress.com (smoothie recipes) Check it out!
